Biblegateway.com: an esv bible source for hope's lectors

& ANYONE WHO NEEDS AN ONLINE BIBLE FOR READING, OR LEGALLY COPYING BIBLE PASSAGES IN THE ESV

Q: WHY USE BIBLEGATEWAY.COM?

  • It has text & two audio versions of the English Standard Version (ESV) of the Bible. All of the Scriptures read during Divine Services at Hope are in the ESV Bible translation.

  • biblegateway.com has user-friendly, customizable features that allow for the reader to hear, see, and easily print the Biblical texts in a form that is most helpful for them:

    • Choose from five font sizes, up to 22 font (see the different sized A letters at the top right of the page)
    • Click on the printer icon to see a full-page view of your chosen Bible passage
    • Click on the gear icon (settings) to remove distracting footnote and cross referencing letters from the body of the text
    • View only the passage you've entered into the search bar, then print only that passage -- no highlighting, copying or pasting into a document necessary
    • Hope's secretary is glad to help you learn to navigate the features available at biblegateway.com. Send email requests to: tracylchesney@gmail.com.

Q: MUST LECTORS USE ONLY BIBLEGATEWAY.COM  FOR PRINTING THE SCRIPTURE PASSAGES READ IN THE DIVINE SERVICE?

  • No . The only requirement is that they are printed and read in the ESV translation of the Bible. There are other popular online websites that have the ESV Bible translation such as  esv.org.  However, biblegateway.com has larger font sizes available, better audio quality, and unlike esv.org, selected passages can be directly printed from the site -- no highlighting, cutting or pasting into a document.
  • Note to Lectors: If you are not able to use your home printer, please email the church secretary to request a copy of your assigned Scripture passages at tracylchesney@gmail.com; this copy will be put into your church mailbox.  A back-up copy of the Scripture readings in large print will be put on the lectern each week, ahead of the Divine Services. If you have not brought your own copy of your Scripture readings  to church, please check to make sure the correct readings are on the lectern before the beginning of the service.

Q: DOES BIBLEGATEWAY.COM HAVE A LECTIONARY CALENDAR WHICH SHOWS WHAT SCRIPTURES TO READ ON THE DATE I'M ASSIGNED TO LECTOR?

No, biblegateway.com does not have a lectionary calendar. To find the Lectionary Calendar used by Hope and other LCMS congregations,

Q: ARE THE STUDY NOTES & COMMENTARIES AT BIBLEGATEWAY.COM THE SAME AS THOSE IN THE LUTHERAN STUDY BIBLE?

  • No.  While the study notes & commentaries at biblegateway.com may often be similar, a comparison would show that they frequently differ in key areas, especially highlighting the differences between a Biblical/Lutheran sacramental theology vs non-sacramental theology, and a Biblical hermeneutic (a method or theory of interpretation) that is rooted in understanding the Biblical/Lutheran doctrine of distinguishing Law & Gospel vs a hermeneutic not rooted in distinguishing Law & Gospel.
  • Hope recommends The Lutheran Study Bible by Concordia Publishing House.  We believe you will not find a study Bible which more faithfully teaches our Biblical/Lutheran theology, and adheres to the Biblical doctrines expressed in the Lutheran Confessions as prescribed in The Book of Concord of 1580.  All resources produced at CPH go through a strict doctrinal review, so you will not be put in the difficult position of trying to figure out how to distinguish true teaching from subtle false teachings when using CPH resources.
